Moving vs. Meandering vs. Bursting

We always want to the catch the ball on the move to make the defense work.  But there are many times that the receiver wants to give the appearance that he is going to not only pop out to catch the ball but that he might reverse his direction and go to the basket.  Also, he might want to pop out and then continue over to the ball handler to get a handoff.

While this catching, cutting and curling action is going on, the other three players are usually 'meandering' around watching the offensive man in front of them for a clue as to what to do.  If a receiver cuts to the basket, then the next man must fill his spot and now this guy becomes the offensive man might want to play with.

While players are meandering into the next position they must be ready to 'burst' when it becomes their turn to play with the ball handler.

Coming Around for a Shot

The offensive player with the ball will pass the ball to the open man.  If the receiver of the ball is covered, then the ball handler will bring the ball over to him to show him he wants to play with him.  In the previous post the receiver was overplayed so he cut to the basket to relieve the pressure while looking to open up a scoring opportunity.

Sometimes the receiver's man will jump off his man as the ball is brought over and then the receiver becomes underplayed.  The receiver will fake like he's going to the basket but come around the dribbler for a shot behind the screen.

Going Backdoor

When an offensive player wants to play with another offensive player, he will throw him the ball.  If the receiver of the ball is covered, the passer will take the ball over to him with the dribble.

If the receiver is overplayed and unable to receive the ball, he will cut to the basket (always going through the backdoor, never the front door!) looking for return pass.

If the passer is really good, he will throw the backdoor pass off the dribble so the defense can't react or set up to make the steal.  If the passer is not a great passer then he needs to be cautious in making this pass:  he might need to pass it with two hands, he might need to throw a two handed over-the-top pass and he has to be prepared to not pass it if he feels that the pass would be too dangerous.

Movement

Offensively how we move must be a priority.   We have to move the ball with the dribble and with the pass and even more importantly we have to move ourselves correctly.  We have to know when to go fast, go slow, burst and meander.  Also all five guys have to be moving with a sense of 'oneness'.  This type of team movement allows us to take advantage of the defense when we make our move to score.
